Monthly puzzle
After our annual neighbourhood garage sale we decided to celebrate our profitable day by having dinner at a local restaurant. One quarter of the group plus one had the beef at $18 and each left a tip of $3. One sixth plus three chose lamb at $24 and each tipped $3.75. One third plus two had the daily special at $16.50 and the rest had salmon at $21. Each of the people in these two latter groups left a tip of $2.25.
When I happened to meet the waiter the next day, he told me the tips he collected from our dinner the night before amounted to $1.50 less than 15%.
What was the amount of his tips?
